Digital Marketing Consultant vs Agency: Which to Hire?

Article

What is the difference between a digital marketing consultant and an agency?

A consultant diagnoses your situation, recommends a plan and advises on decisions, usually working with a small number of clients and talking to you directly. An agency is a team that executes campaigns, design, content or posting for a fee or retainer. The difference is mostly in who you speak to, what they are paid for and how much of the work they do themselves.

How do they compare?

These are tendencies, not rules. Some agencies are transparent and senior-led, and some consultants are thin on delivery. Judge the individual, not the label.

When should you hire a consultant?

Choose a consultant when you need clarity before spending, such as:

  • You are about to launch or relaunch marketing and need a plan and budget logic.
  • You already spend on ads and suspect waste but cannot tell where.
  • You want an independent review of an agency’s or freelancer’s work.
  • You need senior guidance but cannot justify a full-time marketing head. A fractional marketing head covers this.

A good first step is a Growth Audit, which ends in a prioritised fix list you can act on yourself or hand to any team.

When should you hire an agency?

Choose an agency when the direction is clear and you need capacity: creative production, daily campaign management, content, web design or posting. The better your brief and targets, the better an agency performs. This is why many businesses pair the two: a consultant sets the plan and checks the results, and a team executes. Execution can also be delivered through my team at IDM Agency while I stay on as the strategist.

What does it cost?

Fees vary widely by scope and experience, and I would rather not quote a market average I cannot support. The more useful question is what you get for the fee: a plan and decisions, or hours of execution. Ask each option for scope, deliverables, reporting and exit terms in writing.

You can see my own starting prices on the consulting page. Compare them with what other options include, and judge on the scope, not the number alone.

Questions to ask before you hire either

  1. Who will work on my account day to day, and who will I speak to?
  2. How do you decide where my budget goes, and how are you paid?
  3. Will the ad accounts and data stay in my name?
  4. What will I see in reports, and how often?
  5. What happens if we part ways?

Anyone confident in their work answers these plainly. See how I approach this on my page about performance marketing.

FAQs

Is a digital marketing consultant cheaper than an agency?

It depends on scope. A consultant's fee buys advice and review, while an agency's fee buys execution capacity. Compare what is included, not only the price.

Can I work with a consultant and an agency together?

Yes, and it is a common setup. The consultant sets targets and reviews reports, and the agency executes. This keeps the work accountable.

Will a consultant run my ads?

Some do and some only advise. I diagnose, plan and advise, and execution is delivered through my team at IDM Agency when needed.

How do I know if my current agency is performing?

Check that tracking is accurate, that reports show leads and revenue rather than only clicks, and that results meet targets agreed in advance. An independent audit can confirm this.
